Maintain
a healthy, balanced diet
A healthy
and balanced diet can help with weight control and also keep sperm production
at optimal levels. Foods to enjoy and eat freely include fruits, vegetables and
foods high in protein and fibre. Foods to eat in small quantities include red
meat, dairy products, refined foods and caffeine. You should completely avoid
smoking, chilled/iced drinks (can irritate your digestive system) and alcohol.

Engage in
regular, moderate exercise
Exercise
increases your oxygen intake, which improves your circulation, respiration and
muscle condition. Exercise also stimulates your brain’s chemical reactions to
change the way you feel, helping to combat anxiety or depression and improve
concentration. Don’t over exert yourself, but I recommend exercising to raise
your heart rate for 20 minutes (enough to raise a sweat) three to five times a
week.
Manage
stress
Stress
can upset your mental health, which can disturb your normal bodily functions
and affect your chances of conceiving. Maintaining a healthy emotional life and
peace of mind is just as important as physical health. Try to identify and
reduce the things that cause you stress.
Don’t
plan sexual intercourse
Many of
my patients find planned sex becomes hard work. Men find it difficult to
perform at a particular time, so sex becomes a job rather than a pleasure. Many
couples try too hard and become frustrated by performing to a timetable.
Instead, I recommend having sex twice a week (every three days), so the couples
never miss the fertile period as healthy sperm can survive up to 72 hours in a
woman’s body. I don’t recommend having sex everyday around the time of
ovulation as this can create emotional tension, put too much pressure on the
female fallopian tubes and can reduce the sperm quality.
Take
supplements
Both women and men should take supplements in order to provide
their bodies with the critical nutrients that will put them in the optimal
shape to conceive. Not only do they contain the most
important vitamins and minerals such as folic acid, zinc and selenium,
they also contain the classic Chinese herbs of goji berry, sesame and ginseng,
which are known for their fertility boosting powers. The supplements additionally
include a double-distilled premium fish oil as a softgel in each daily sachet,
which contains the optimum level of the beneficial Omega-3s DHA and EPA.
