How To Help a Shy Child, Listen!

Toward the end of the summer, I was seeing a middle-school girl for a physical. The notes from a clinic visit last spring said she was a good student but didn’t talk enough in class. So I asked her: Is this still a problem for you?
I’m shy, she said. I’m just shy.“Should I have turned to her mother and suggested — a counselor? An academic evaluation? Should I have probed further? How do you feel in school, do you have some friends, is anybody bullying you?

Investing in Adolescent Girls!!!

The relevance of girls and women to national development cannot be overemphasised. This is why the United Nations Foundation should be commended for inaugurating the International Day of the Girl Child.

As you Drive your Kids! A must Read!

Taking a drive with children is exciting. It is one of the ways of bonding with them. But it can become risky if you refuse to heed certain safety measures

 1. Beware of front seat dangers
Anyone, child or adult, sitting in the front seats of a car is more vulnerable to injuries in case of a head-on collision. Children in a car, who are not fastened with a seat belt, or who are not placed in an appropriate sized and correctly fitted child seat, may be thrown out of their seats with high impact, leading to serious injuries.

Birthing Choices: Health Care Providers & Birth Locations! Choose Right!

The nine months of pregnancy are filled with choices and decisions. These include decisions about exercise, clothing, prenatal care providers and birth location. Pregnancy and the childbirth are regarded by most women as one of their most memorable experiences. Being well informed about your options can help provide the gratifying experience that you and your family desire. Two important early decisions will concern your choice of a health care provider and your birth location. The two decisions are often closely tied with one another because most health care providers already have a strong preference for a particular birth location. 10 Nutrients That Every Child Needs.

Calcium: Builds strong bones and teeth, promotes healthy nerve and muscle function, helps blood clot, and helps the body convert food into energy.

Essential fatty acids (EFAs): Help build cells, regulate the nervous system, strengthen the cardiovascular system, build immunity, and help the body absorb nutrients. Necessary for healthy brain function and vision.

Iron: important for making hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying red pigment in blood, and myoglobin, a pigment that stores oxygen in muscles. Lack of iron can cause anemia, which can result in fatigue, weakness, and irritability.

Magnesium: Keeps bones strong and the heart rhythm steady, supports the immune system, and helps maintain muscle and nerve function.

Potassium: Works with sodium to control the body's water balance, which helps maintain blood pressure. Assists with muscle function and heart rhythm and, in later years, may reduce the risk of kidney stones and osteoporosis.

Vitamin A: Plays an important role in vision and bone growth; helps protect the body from infections; promotes the health and growth of cells and tissues in the body, including the hair, nails, and skin.

Vitamin C: Helps form and repair red blood cells, bones, and tissues; helps keep your child's gums healthy and strengthens blood vessels, minimizing bruising; assists with healing, boosts the immune system, and keeps infections at bay. Also helps the body absorb iron from iron-rich foods.

Vitamin D: Helps the body absorb minerals like calcium and builds strong teeth and bones. Essential for reaching growth potential and peak bone mass. Also functions as a hormone with roles in immune system health, insulin production, and regulation of cell growth.

Vitamin E: Limits the production of free radicals, which can damage cells. Important for immunity, DNA repair, and other metabolic processes.

Zinc: Needed by more than 70 enzymes that aid digestion and metabolism, and essential for growth.

Parents’ Genes May Influence Children’s Back-To-School Fears!

Many parents may have noticed their children seemed on edge during their first week of school. They may have been agitated, withdrawn or more focused on themselves, rather than what was going on around them. Such behaviours are classic symptoms of high anxiety, says Université de Montréal researcher Richard Tremblay.

As school resumes, raise your child’s IQ!

Holiday is over and some schools have reopened for the new academic year.

Keep your Child Safe while they PLAY!

Your child is not a baby anymore; he wants to test his new strength and budding independence and run, climb, and jump. The playground is the perfect place to take him, but beware of hidden hazards that can cause painful and sometimes permanent injuries, whether the site is on school property, on church grounds, or in a park, hotel, resort, or childcare center. Slides might be crooked, swings broken, surfacing too hard, and climbing equipment too high. In fact, hospitals treat 100,000 Nigerian children every year for playground-related injuries. Of those injuries, three-quarters are blamed on faulty playground equipment, and more than half are caused by falls onto unforgiving surfaces.

Weaning

What does it mean to have weaned a child?
When your baby stops nursing and gets all his nutrition from sources other than the breast, he's considered weaned. Although babies are also weaned from the bottle, the term most often refers to when a baby stops breastfeeding.
Weaning is a long goodbye — bittersweet and freeing at the same time. But weaning doesn't need to end the intimate bond you and your child created through nursing. It just means you're nourishing and nurturing in different ways.
If you often nursed your child for comfort, find other ways to make him feel better. Read a book, sing a song together, or play outside instead. If your child protests, be calm and firm and, if you need to, hand him to your partner for a cuddle.

Question To Ask your Self When Buying a Diaper Bag!

You may not get to choose your baby’s sex, control how many hours you spend in the delivery room or have a say in the bizarre cravings your body cooks up while pregnant. However, the world is your veritable oyster when it comes to many other baby-related things, such as nursery decor and infant necessities.
That, of course, includes diaper bags. Before you run out and buy one, though, it’s important to first determine your needs. Thousands of diaper bags are available for purchase, but keep in mind that not all are created equal. Additionally, what you’re looking for in a diaper bag may vary from other moms and dads. If you’re shopping around for the perfect diaper bag, ask yourself these questions before buying:

What To pack in your Hospital Bag When Going into Labor

I remember being about 32 weeks pregnant and all the conversation at work switched from, "How you feeling?" to "Are you packed yet?".
However, if you're having a hospital birth, there are a few things to make your stay a little more pleasant. Here's the list I came up with, but feel free to let me know what you took, or are taking.

For You:

Pillow: Hospital pillows are about the thickness of a communion wafer – maybe it's so you can't smother someone with them to get your inheritance early, dunno – so it's always nice to have a pillow from home. Not only is more comfortable, but your pillow kind of smells like your bed and that's always comforting. Use a non-white pillow case so it's not confused with a hospital pillow that someone could walk off with when you're in the "loo trying to poo".

True dat.  But a lot of the time, it feels like he might as well be.
Here’s why:

1. It’s a business arrangement.  You might not have to stick some Jacksons in his waistband, but you’ll pay.  Whether it’s a night out with the guys, keeping your yap shut when he ignores the dirty dishes (again!) or some major baum-chicka-wow-wow time, you owe him for his services.
